Our work

The Charitable Independence Initiative (CII) protects the independence of America’s charitable sector and promotes donors’ freedom to support causes of their choice. The Initiative emphasizes preserving nonprofit autonomy, safeguarding donor intent, and ensuring federal policy supports—not hinders—charitable work. CII helps local nonprofits, foundations, and community leaders understand how federal policies under consideration affect their missions.

CII focuses on local leaders and organizations that have longstanding relationships with their national elected representatives. Through direct outreach, one-on-one information sharing, and expert analysis, CII’s efforts focus on equipping local leaders to inform lawmakers about the real-world impact of their work and the value they contribute to the public good.
